Description
Centennial of the ingress of the blessed J. Matulaitis (solemn taking the position at the diocese) to the Vilnius Cathedral was celebrated in December 2018. After St. Mass of the solemn anniversary the historic St. Peter’s Chapel was opened at the Cathedral, where the relics of two bishops of Lithuania – the blessed Jurgis and the blessed Teofilius are honoured now. In the center of the chapel, above the reliquary with the relic of the blessed Jurgis, a mosaic created at the Vatican Workshop in 1987 to commemorate the beatification of St. George in Rome can be seen. The reliquary of the blessed Teofilius is on the left side, above it, there is a canonical picture of the Blessed. The tombstone of the bishop Vladislavas Bandurskis (1865-1932) standing to the right of the chapel remembers earlier times. The bishop Teofilius Matulionis visited and prayed at the Vilnius Cathedral many times, admired and followed the example of St. Casimir’s holiness. On 16 February 1940, he sacrificed solemn pontifical Mass for Lithuania in the presence of representatives of the Lithuanian authorities and the army in the cathedral.
