Description

Memorial stone to commemorate Jonas Misiūnas-Green Devil, commander of the Kaugonys stop of Kaišiadorys railway station, who later became commander of the Great Fighting District. Jonas Misiūnas chose the nickname “Green Devil” and created the Partisan Great Fighting District. During the fierce fighting in these neighbourhoods, many young Lithuanian fighters and partisans were killed. Their graves have not all been found in Kaugonys and surrounding forests. On one side of the station, there is the Kaugonys Cemetery, the partisans buried secretly in 1946 rest there. To the other side of the forest, there are the graves of Migutis – Pustakiemis, and partisans are buried there as well. The graves in these areas are frequently visited by relatives. The locals remember Jonas Misiūnas-Green Devil, the leader of the Great Fighting Team, as a tough, demanding man. These features of the character seem to reflect his year of birth, the coldest month of winter, January. Eyewitnesses say he often carried a typewriter with him and wrote various orders and proclamations. The partisan was very energetic, had organizational talent. After the NKVD units destroyed contact points, dissipated fighters, and burned down homesteads, a sophisticated communication system of district headquarters and platoon was again in operation a few days later.
