Description
The blessed Teofilius is depicted in the outfit of the exile camp. He wears a hundred-thread quilted jacket. Frustrated in every way but not broken. The source of his strength is a folding wooden cross pressed to his bosom. Christ is his hope. Therefore, his posture is dignified. The cell wall and lighting, as well as the closed composition of the painting, denote a life marked by long years of captivity. Legs are in the dark – he is imprisoned, unable to move freely, but the chest (heart) and head are illuminated from above. He is free. The stick, on which he relies, also serves him as the shepherd’s stick. Only Piusa (bishop’s hat) received at the Riga station after returning from Solovka forced labour camp is more obvious evidence of his episcopal service. The aura marks Teofilius holiness.
