Description
14 June 1989, in the churchyard of Kaišiadorys Cathedral, a cross was erected to commemorate the suffering of the exiles; the author – A. Šalkauskas. A. Šalkauskas bases the structure of his monuments on the traditional forms, but interprets them in a unique way, complements with his imagination and creative pastiche typical of him. It is a huge sign of the church favour to all martyrs and exiles of the Soviet regime and at the same time the bid of information that persecutions and humiliations of the Christian faith have their own spiritual meaning that cannot be limited to one period as if it is no longer relevant to us. The persecution of faith and Christian worldview formed by the value beliefs show that the Soviet ideology saw Christianity as the greatest danger to itself.
