Description
A chapel in memory of partisans of the Great Fighting District was built in the centre of the city cemetery from 1944 to 1953. In memory of all the freedom fighters buried there, the cross created by folk artist A. Šalkauskas was erected in 1995. Later, the idea to build a memorial to all the partisans, who were born, lived, fought and killed in the Kaišiadorys area, began to be implemented. The chapel, construction of which was launched in 1993, was designed by Stasys Petrauskas, an architect from Kaišiadorys. The sculptures were created by Audronė Skarbaliūtė from Pravieniškės, stained-glass windows by professor Kazys Morkūnas, a native of Žiežmariai. The chapel was consecrated by a former political prisoner, Chancellor of Kaisiadorys Diocese, Prelate Jonas Jonys on 23 August 1998. Black granite slabs embedded in the chapel walls bear the names of 358 partisans.
