Description
Jonas Žemaitis was a priest and a saviour of the Jews during World War II. During the war, the priest J. Žemaitis saved about 100 Jewish children and was awarded the Life Saving Cross. He was a parish priest in Rumšiškės from 1956to 1994, a lecturer at Kaunas Interdisciplinary Priest Seminary until 1972. He made many efforts to move the wooden church and the belfry from the old Rumšiškės to the new ones. Since 19 August 1994, he was the altarist of Rumšiškės parish. He is buried in the churchyard of Rumšiškės Church. A small memorial plate was unveiled next to the tombstone plate of the priest J. Žemaitis, announcing that the priest J. Žemaitis, the savior of Jewish children, rests here.
