Description
Jurgis and Ona Matulionis had three sons while living in Kudoriškis: Jonas (1871-1920), Teofilius (1873-1955) and Juozas (1875-1955). The young mother had not yet seen her fourth baby: she died when giving birth. Teofilius was four years old then, and he only remembers that a small bundle of a dead baby was lying next to his mother in the coffin. It happened in May 1877. The 27-year-old mother was buried in Alunta cemetery, her son Bishop Teofilius, after returning from Russia in 1933, used to visit her grave. With great Pietism and deep feeling, he also uttered the name of Alunta. Having survived all the wars and post-war calamities, a magnificent stone cross on the grave of Jurgis Matulionis has survived to this day, and on its metal plate, there is still an inscription about Jurgis Matulionis buried here. The grave is decorated with a forged metal fence. Since the old inscription is difficult to read, a new sign with the inscription: “Archbishop’s/Servant’s of God/Martyr’s/Father/Jurgis Matulionis/(1833-1911)” was affixed to the cross at the initiative of the sister nuns.
