Description
The three partisans of the Great Fighting Partisan District were preparing to raise the Tricolor in Kruonis Township on the night of 15 February 1946. Unfortunately, they got killed in an ambush. The bodies of the partisans were lying desecrated in the town square and were later taken to the nearby Gojaus pinewood and buried in abandoned trenches. The remains of about 30 Lithuanian defenders rest in the Kruonis Gojaus pinewood. Some of their names are incused on a carved cross erected in the pinewood. If we read them, we will find the name of the only young girl – Genė Lekavičiūtė-Saulutė. Every year here, the commemoration of this heroic march takes place on 16 February at the initiative of Vytautas Markevičius, the resident of Rumšiškės. Students from Kaišiadorys, Kaunas and other surrounding areas come here to commemorate the act of bravery of three partisans: the commemoration of February 16 in the occupied Kruonis region in 1946. 57 years have passed since this event.
